Office Design Tips for Growing Companies

It’s always exciting to see a business grow. With all the hard work everyone puts into helping the business succeed, it’s amazing to see all those efforts pay off. But as businesses grow, it’s very common for them to encounter some growing pains along the way.

As companies change, so do the things they need from their office. A space that used to be a perfect fit can suddenly feel very limiting. If your company is going through some growth, there are some important things you should keep in mind when it comes to office design.

Think Ahead

One of the biggest mistakes companies make when they plan an office is only thinking about their current needs. While it is indeed important to think about today, you also need to think about tomorrow. The last thing you want is to go through all the effort of planning a new space, only to quickly outgrow it. Be sure to think about how much your company has grown in recent years and how much you expect to grow in the next 12-24 months.

Get Input from Employees

Nobody understands how exactly an office space is used better than your employees. They spend all day working in the space so they know exactly which things are working well and which things need to be improved. Could any departments be reorganized to make it easier for them to collaborate with other teams? Are there any other problems in the office that are making people less productive? Whether you need to move into a new space or rework your current space, taking the time to get some input from employees will be able to help you make sure the final result helps people work as efficiently as possible.

Open Floor Plans

Open plan offices have become very common in recent years for many different reasons. Some companies like the idea of promoting transparency, others want to help promote teamwork and collaboration. But for companies that are quickly growing and changing, open offices also have the benefit of being easy to rearrange as needed. This gives you the freedom you need to bring more people onboard or move areas around without being limited by fixed walls or partitions.

Worried that an open office would have too little privacy? Mobile screens, demountable walls, or sound masking can add a sense of privacy and space definition while still making it easy to change around a space as needed.

Flexible Furniture

When you have a flexible office layout, flexible furniture will help you take full advantage of your space. If you think your office will need to be rearranged often, you don’t want to have to move around a lot of heavy furniture. As you shop around for office furniture, look for lightweight pieces or furniture with wheels on the bottom that will help make reorganizing a snap. Modular workstations are also very popular with growing companies since they’re so easy to add on to as more people join the team.
