2019 Commercial Design Build Trends to Watch

It’s hard to believe that 2019 is already just around the corner. As we take some time to look back on all the exciting projects we got to work on in 2018, we’re very excited about what the future has in store. We’ve already started seeing signs of some commercial design trends that we think are going to be big in the new year.

Experience-Driven Spaces

All work and no play has never helped make anybody happier or more productive, and employers are beginning to embrace that concept. Adding experience-driven spaces in the workplace invite people to take a little bit of “me time” during the day, helping bring down stress levels and giving people a way to socialize and have fun during the day. Experience-driven spaces can go in a lot of different directions, from a simple coffee bar with snacks to fitness centers and game rooms with video games, ping pong tables, or golf simulators. There are lots of different ways to make this trend work for you so don’t be afraid to get creative!

Wellness in the Workplace

Speaking of office fitness centers, there is a major trend toward designing offices to help improve employee wellness which shows no signs of slowing down in 2019. Fitness centers are just one way to get on board with this trend, and if you’re able to schedule yoga or other fitness classes before work or throughout the day, it’s easier for people to work fitness into their lifestyle. As you plan workstations, adding sit-to-stand desks are a great way to encourage movement throughout the day and give people control to work however they’re most comfortable. Designing offices to maximize access to natural light is another excellent option. Some companies even like to dedicate space to cafes that serve healthy lunches and snacks.

Bringing the Outdoors Inside

People love feeling connected to nature, but when work needs to get done, it’s not always easy to find the time to get outside. Because of this, biophilic design is another trend that’s become hugely influential in commercial design. Designing spaces to include things like living plant walls, rustic furniture, and elements like wood and stone help create an environment that feels more natural. Even incorporating materials with organic shapes can help tie in natural elements in a subtle way. This is another trend where improving access to natural light is another excellent idea.

Coworking Spaces

Coworking spaces, such as the ones offered by companies like WeWork, have become so popular in recent years that even companies that have their own offices are looking for ways to bring that unique type of atmosphere to their space. These types of spaces are known for their open environments that facilitate a free exchange of ideas. Open floor plans are a big part of this trend, but it’s more than just taking down walls. You also have to find ways to bring people together, such as coffee bars and relaxed collaborative spaces.
